Janet Museveni (nee Keinembabazi) was born on August 15, 1949, in Bwongyera village, Kajara, Ntungamo, Uganda).
Her parents were Mr and Mrs Edward Kataha. Her father also got a child with an aunt of Janet’s and this cousin as well as step-sister to Janet was called Jennifer Nankunda, who later became Mrs. Jennifer Kuteesa, wife of the current Foreign Minister Sam Kuteesa.
Janet Keinembabazi attended Kyamate primary school around the same time as one Violet Kajubiri, a step-sister to Yoweri Museveni. She went on for high school to Bweranyagye Girls’ Secondary School.
Janet Keinembabazi was an insignificant student; there were times that she was the bottom of the class. She does not like to be reminded of her poor school performance, and this is why she has rarely identified herself much in public with her former school or its activities.
She did not pass her O’Levels and went to live with a well-to-do cousin, John Wycliffe Kazzora, who financed her overseas studies. She attended a secretarial course in Wales and on returning to Uganda got a job as a ground hostess with the then East African Airways.
She had originally applied to be an air stewardess but was turned down because she suffers from epilepsy. During her East African Airways tour in the Nairobi office, she worked with air hostesses like the late Dorcas Karara.
It is also said by some of her former colleagues in Nairobi that she was a girlfriend of the Nairobi East African Airways manager, Patrick Makumbi, with whom she had intimate relations.
Around 1971, she is supposed to have fallen in love with a young man called William Mwesigwa, nicknamed “Black Mwesigwa”. Mwesigwa was a classmate of Yoweri Museveni at Ntare School in the 1960s and he shared Museveni’s love for guerrilla warfare and revolutionary talk.
When Mwesigwa fled to exile in Tanzania in 1971 and became involved in guerrilla war against the new government of President Idi Amin, Janet Keinembabazi joined him there. Janet Keinembabazi, Mwesigwa, Museveni, and Hope Rwaheru shared a house in Dar es Salaam because as refugees they did not have much money to rent different houses.
After Museveni killed Mwesigwa in 1972, Janet became romantically close to Museveni. Museveni himself had another child called Muhoozi Kainerugaba by Hope Rwaheru and he murdered Hope around 1974.
Some sources say Museveni and Janet Kataha got married in London in August 1973 but most information available in Uganda says that the two have never formally legalised their marriage and that has remained a cause of tensions between them.
For example, no single photograph of Museveni has ever been seen of him with a wedding ring on his finger.
When the Amin regime fell from power in April 1979, the Musevenis moved back to Uganda from Tanzania.
Most reports say a daughter Natasha was born to the couple in 1976 and another daughter Patience, was born in 1980 and their last child, Diana, was born in 1981.
But some reports from knowledgeable sources in the Uganda People’s Congress party say that details of Natasha are not clear.
Natasha was a child of Janet and Black Mwesigwa or another comrade of Museveni’s called Martin Mwesiga who Museveni murdered in 1974.
Others say that Natasha’s real father could even be Patrick Makumbi, her former boss and lover when she worked for East African Airways.
They argue that the only children between Museveni and Janet are Patience and Diana. Around the time that Major Muhoozi Kainerugaba got married in 1999, Ugandan newspapers used to confuse Patience and Diana because of how much they resemble, but none of them confused Natasha with any of her sisters.
These pundits also point to the behaviour of the Museveni children.
They say that whereas Patience who is now married to Odrek Rwabwogo and Diana who is now married to Geoffrey Kamuntu have been in the public eye like Muhoozi and Natasha, Patience and Diana have remained without any reports or rumours of scandal or strange behaviour all their lives.
But the Museveni children who have gone wild, been violent sometimes, or sexually loose have been Muhoozi and Natasha, because when they were told about their real parents, it affected them. Muhoozi once pulled a gun at the gate of Nile Hotel in Kampala when he was stopped from entering a music show and Natasha’s pregnancy and abortion with soldiers’ children is well-known.
In 1981 when Museveni launched his guerrilla war against the new government of former President Milton Obote, Janet Museveni and her children re-located to Nairobi, Kenya, where they lived with family friends until 1983.
In 1983, the Museveni family moved to Gottenberg, Sweden, where they lived until May 1986, four months after Museveni had captured state power in Kampala. In Sweden they lived on the same apartment block as the children of Amelia Kyambadde, who is now the Principal Private Secretary to Museveni.
When Museveni captured state power in 1986, he had vowed that his new wife was now Winnie Byanyima, who had been his childhood friend and then secret girlfriend since the late 1970s.
That is why Janet did not immediately come to Uganda when her husband took power because Byanyima was in her way. Prominent church leaders and Museveni’s Prime Minister the late Dr. Samson Kisekka told Museveni that his continuing affair with Byanyima was embarrassing him and Uganda.
That was when Museveni ordered his stepbrother Salim Saleh to evict Byanyima from State House and Janet came to Uganda in May 1986.
Janet Museveni then started a campaign to show Winnie Byanyima as an evil and malicious woman who tried to kidnap Museveni’s son Muhoozi and so on.
Janet founded the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO), a private relief agency in late 1986 which she said was shaped by her experience as a refugee. She also became involved with the HIV/AIDS campaign in Uganda through the 1990s.
In fact, the warm feelings between Patrick Makumbi and Janet continued after she became First Lady that for a number of years the Kampala office of UWESO was located at the Kampala City Council offices, where Makumbi was the Town Clerk.
When Museveni discovered that the two were still an item, he worked toward the dismissal of Makumbi as Town Clerk.
Many people, though, do not know that under the cover of UNESCO, Janet Museveni has been receiving large financial and material donations from Europe and North America, which she channels to her children and some of her loyal staff.
It is the money she raises from local donations that she actually gives to Uganda’s orphans.
Around 1988 or 1989, Janet Museveni got the shock of her life when she tested positive for HIV, which she got from her husband. In those days, people who got AIDS were sure they were going to die because there were no antiretroviral drugs yet.
The shock of being found HIV-positive is what made Mrs. Museveni turn to religion for comfort and she started following the born again movement.
At the same time, her husband’s excessive infidelity and getting many children out of wedlock pushed Janet more and more in the direction of religion.
In 1992, the “Uganda Confidential” newsletter reported that Janet Museveni and her half sister/half cousin Jennifer Kuteesa had been involved in a land wrangle with the Kagondoki family in Ntungamo and to resolve it, they arranged for the murder of one of the boys, Aaron Kagondoki.
In 1994, Janet Museveni decided to pursue a degree in education at Makerere University.
As usual, she was dull in class and a no-nonsense and principled lecturer in the Department of Psychology, a Mr. Opolot, marked her exam paper and she had to do a re-take because she had failed the paper.
As usual, she look a leaf from her husband who disregards institutions which stand in his way. Janet Museveni was humiliated by having to be told to do a re-take and using the power of State House, she influenced Makerere University to expel Opolot.
She was awarded free marks in the paper, she did not do the teaching practice which is compulsory for undergraduates pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, and so she got a junk degree from Makerere.
Meanwhile, while Janet Museveni was trying to behave in public as a God-fearing woman of high moral standards, the public was hearing something different.
In the mid 1990s, her daughter Natasha from nowhere turned into a crazy girl and began doing crazy things. She started sleeping with President Museveni’s aide de camp, Captain Kavuma, and she got pregnant by a sergeant who used to be a guard at State House.
When it came to discussing what to do about Natasha’s pregnancy, Museveni took a liberal position saying since it had already happened they had to live with it. (This makes us wonder if Museveni could be so casual about it if Natasha was his real daughter.)
Mrs. Museveni refused to hear that and insisted that Natasha had to have an abortion so that she could get a “proper” marriage in future. The abortion was carried out on the orders of the God-fearing born-again Janet Museveni.
There were also reports from sources inside State House around 1999 that Janet Museveni had tried to befriend and sleep with a young soldier in State House but the soldier could not imagine such a thing and he refused and fled into exile in London.
The Internet Wikipedia encyclopedia said in a profile of Mrs. Museveni this way:
“[D]uring this same period there grew an impression in Uganda that Janet Museveni, behind her modest Christian beliefs, led an extravagant lifestyle.
In May 2000, the government-owned New Vision published a story saying that the Libyan leader Col. Mu’ammar Gadhafi had donated a $100,000 BMW car to Janet Museveni.
The light green BMW, model 740, was flown to Entebbe International Airport from Libya in October 1999. Abbas Misurati of the Libyan embassy in Kampala confirmed the reports, saying the car was a personal gift from Gadhafi to the First Lady.
Janet Museveni has been widely rumoured to be the core shareholder in a number of Uganda’s largest businesses ranging from hotels to real estate and telecommunications. Among these are the Hotloaf Bakery, Simu telephone booth company, Garden City Complex, East African Airlines, Crane Bank, and the Imperial Resort Beach Hotel.”
That is a reputable encyclopedia telling you about Janet Museveni, not RadioKatwe.com which some people think just hates the First Family.
Janet Museveni was having an affair with a Swedish man of Eritrean origin and she had bought him a lavish house in Sweden.
It seems Mrs. Museveni had become tired of all her husband’s extramarital escapades. The latest reports say he now has four wives, apart from Janet.
Another shocking report says that there is a room in State House which is kept strictly locked, 24 hours a day. The only person who has the key to it and opens it is President Museveni himself.
One day, Janet Museveni got the key in one way or the other and went to check the room to see what her husband keeps there which nobody is allowed to see.
The sources said she opened the room and almost fainted. On the floor there was something that looked like a traditional African witchcraft shrine and it was surrounded by bones, teeth of animals and other juju things.
In the middle of it there was a life-size statue of….Yoweri Museveni!
Mrs. Museveni could not believe that her husband had become so mad and was now a full worshipper of witchcraft!
In November 2005, she announced that she would seek the parliamentary seat of Ruhama in the election of February 23, 2006.
On the day of nominations, Janet Museveni was nominated in the morning and her rival Augustine Ruzindana of FDC was nominated in the afternoon. After her nomination, Mrs. Museveni threw a big party in the township paid for by State House.
Ruzindana did not have that kind of money and he instead went about meeting people and asking for their support.
Instead of the Ruhaama people abandoning him because he had no money, the villagers contributed their goats, bulls, and chicken and threw a party for him and themselves.
That is how little support Janet Museveni has in Ntungamo.
In fact, the thing which got the Canadian journalist Blake Lambert in trouble with the government Media Centre was not because of his anti-NRM views (he is a moderate in his views, we are told), but because he visited Ruhaama and spent a week there and when he came back, he concluded that there was no way Janet Museveni could win the parliamentary seat there.
The Uganda Tyrant Yoweri Museveni, appointed his wife Janet Museveni as disaster and Preparedeness mininister for Karamoja. Why Karamoja? very interesting, because Karamoja (North Eastern Uganda) is seated on large deposits of Gold estimated to be in Trillion (US) dollars. Oil and Urenium samples have also been found in this part of the country. What Preparedeness does Karamoja need?
What corruption can do for a poor country like Uganda. Here are some of properties owned by the first family in Uganda.
Charm Towers, the former headquarters of Uganda Commercial Bank in Kampala.
Garden City Complex, Kampala. That is why it was built on a wetland but nobody could say anything to stop it.
Roofings Limited. This is the property of Janet Museveni. We are yet to find out if she owns it alone or as a partnership with her children.
Uganda Telecom. This one is owned by Janet Museveni but we have information that she got it in conjunction with her relative and the then Finance Minister Sam Kuteesa.
MTN Uganda. The First Family owns a 47.5 percent stake in MTN Uganda which is Uganda’s largest mobile phone service provider.
Kabira Club we are also told is owned by the First Family using Sudhir Ruparelia as a front. It follows therefore that Kabira International School is also owned by the First Family.
Orient Bank. It is controlled exclusively by Sam Kuteesa and he made sure that all the payments to the Uganda Revenue Authority whether they are normal taxes, general receipts for driving permits, passports, trading licenses, new car registration and so on are paid through Orient Bank. You can imagine how much he gets from the URA account.
Kampala International University Kampala and the proposed Mbarara branch are also owned by the Museveni conglomerate using businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba as a front.
Lake View Hotel Mbarara is also for the First Family. It was bought from Wavamuno some years back.
St. Lawrence Citizens High School is owned by the First Family. In fact you could remember a story in the newspapers recently when Museveni and Janet were the guests of honour at Parents Day at the school but when they have no children in the school.
Imperial Resort Beach Hotel. It has a bullet-proof presidential suite and sometimes Museveni goes there to rest from his state duties or to meet his other women behind Janets back.
Nakasero Market. That one is now in the hands Janet Museveni and Basajjabalaba was brought in as a frint with Kampala Mayor Nasser Sebaggala as a “facilitator.”
Speke Resort Munyonyo is another property owned by Janet Museveni with her children that is why you see that when heads of state have been coming to Uganda they have been booked there.
The Simu 4 U phone call boxes in Kampala are owned by Janet Museveni. These boxes were targetted by protestors during the arrest of Besigye in 2005 becasue they knew the owners.
If you know other properties owned by the Museveni family as usual feel free to give us a shout and tell us so that we shout it to the Ugandans.
We suspect that Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel Entebbe of Karim Hirji and Crested Towers in Kampala are also owned by Museveni these days. But we cannot yet confirm it.
The greedy man and his family have now been entering joint businesses with the Libyans to co-own Uganda Telecom, Crested Towers, and the National Housing flats in Kampala.
Updated April 25 2007:
Reports of Museveni family hotel in London
We are getting reports that the Museveni clan owns an hotel in Knights Bridge in SW1, London, the United Kingdom. If anybody has information on this, please send it in.
Museveni owner of BIDCO factory in Jinja
We can confirm to our readers that the controversial BIDCO company which manufactures cooking oil in Jinja is also has the First Family’s hands all over it. The factory is located in Masese. Why do you think Museveni pushed for Bidco to get the huge land on Kalangala island the same way he is pushing for Mabira to go to Mehta?
Some Background Pingpong:
Sources close to the first family have seamlessly confirmed that Brigadier Henry Tumukunde’s close business associate, a Swedish national of Ethiopian Eritrea descent as the new boyfriend of Janet Museveni. Sources have also confirmed that Museveni hit squad assigned to deal with the Janet boyfriend had code-named the Swedish-Eritrean boyfriend as “Osama”.
Sources have further revealed that Janet and her Swedish boyfriend ‘Osama’ are known to have met regularly at the Kololo residence of Brigadier Tumukunde, currently detained by M7 at the senior army officers’ mess in Kampala. It is understood that the secret love meetings between Janet and ‘Osama’ at Brigadier Tumukunde’s Kololo resident is what triggered the latest arrest of Henry Tumukunde. In a complicated twist of events, Janet is now understood to have most recently donated a newly acquired multi-million dollar residence in Stockholm the capital city of Sweden to this lover-boy. Indeed sources have confirmed that ‘Osama’ now actually lives in the residence.
It is now understood that the family wrangle began when M7 paid a secret visit to the residence of Mr Mugisha Muhwezi the Jinja Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and close relative of the Jim Muhwezi Katugugu (of the Rev. Katugugu family). While at the RDC’s residence, Museveni craved for a juicy young woman also cousin to Mugisha Muhwezi called Hindubi. It is understood that Hindubi eventually submitted to Museveni’s menacing advances. The two spent a few nights together. M7 understandably met Hindubi more frequently and later got her pregnant. M7 then arranged for Hindubi’s employment as a housekeeper in State House, Nakasero.
Reports further say that to confuse the situation and ensure his love affair with Hindubi remained secret to Janet, Museveni then faked up a love affair between Hindubi and his younger brother Major General Caleb Akandanwaho commonly called Salim Saleh, whom M7 has used as a cover up for most of his corrupt deals. Understandably, Hindubi delivered the M7 baby, the mother was financially facilitated by M7 through Salim Saleh. It so happens that Caleb Akandwanaho (Salim Saleh) and his sister in law Janet Museveni still remain on non-speaking terms and have no verbal contacts. Museveni reportedly continued his love affair with Hindubi and even got a second child.
However, the secret affair between the two lovebirds (M7 and Hindubi) suffered a massive setback when Brigadier Tumukunde as the then head of ‘Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence’ (CMI) unearthed the Museveni-Hindubi affair and the fake role by Salim Saleh. Accordingly Tumukunde passed on this information to Janet Museveni who broke down to pieces. Janet is reported to have cried for weeks pleading that although she had known Museveni as a sexual deviant, she never associated him with house girls. She said, she had no explanations to offer for why Museveni’s choice of their housemaid who was officially called a housekeeper. It is understood that Janet sought counsel and support of her family. She explained that while she had learnt to live with Museveni’s infidelity with his women ministers and personal aides, she had never prepared for love rivalry from their housemaid.
Impeccable sources said Janet then arranged to obtain the hair and blood of the two children from their Kampala doctors through Tumukunde clandestine networks. Accordingly, Janet then arranged for a trip to visit her boyfriend with Tumukunde to Sweden. To conceal their itinerary from Museveni’s intelligence, the trio arranged to meet in Hamburg, German where Janet had arranged a prior medical consultation appointment. While in Hamburg, Janet and Tumukunde then sought for a medical DNA report linking the outwardly regarded Hindubi-Salim Saleh children to M7. The German medical contacts reportedly refused to provide the service insisting that it would breach medical ethics to verify DNA profiles without the consent of the parties. It is said, when the German established the identities of the parties being sought in the DNA, they leaked the information to M7 who got infuriated beyond his wildest levels. Sources have confirmed that following the episode, M7 began open sessions with the ‘housekeeper’ Hindubi. Although some people knew their relationship, the open relationship shocked even M7’s closest people. Some thought he was running amok and began leaking information to save the country from possible disaster. Since M7 got rid of the senior colleagues for their opposing views, he has been surrounded sycophants and fresh university graduate with no public service experience.
It is reported that M7 issued a radio announcement demoting Tumukunde from his security office. Upon return, a fight took place between Janet and M7. Janet demanded as part of a ‘peace deal’ the reinstatement of Tumukunde. This was strongly opposed by Salim Saleh and others. Janet brokered a deal that ensured Tumukunde’s as well as her own survival. She did not need any further DNA on the children as M7 understandably admitted that they were his children.
Tumukunde is reported to have told State House staff that M7 had played dirty games against his colleagues and that it was necessary to remove him from power. He also complained that earlier in November 2000, M7 had duped him with a fake promotion to Brigadier while demoting him in his duties from Chief of Military Intelligence (CMI) to a mere military commander in the North. On that occasion, it was Janet who again rescued Tumukunde by having him transferred to Internal Security Organisation (ISO). It is understood that on that occasion, Janet personally appointed Tumukunde onto the Museveni 2001 Re-election campaign. This was done on two grounds; first to prevent Tumukunde from taking the new posting to the North and second to enable Janet to use Tumukunde to prevent Yoweri M7’s sponsorship of his numerous girlfriends for parliamentary election as NRM nominees particularly in Western Uganda. Yet again, Salim Saleh fought hard against Tumukunde’s nomination to the ‘Vote of M7 2001 Campaign’ but failed.
The Janet Eritrea boyfriend connection continued on low heat until late last year 2004, when the Swedish Eritrean began travels into Uganda to spend time with Janet. Museveni reported instituted round the clock surveillance of Tumukunde and Janet movement and particularly monitor Tumukunde’s Kololo residence where Janet reportedly spent most of her daylight hours with her lover-boy. Reports suggest Museveni infiltrated some inner members of Brigadier Tumukunde’s family.
It is understood, the Eritrean has virtually taken over the huge mansion bought by M7 for Janet in the eastern Stockholm plush island suburb of Lindigo, near the Forresta Hotel over looking the lake. The multi-million residence at Torsvik, Larsberg local centres and described as adjacent to the world-famous Millesgarden Sculpture Park.
Although, Janet Museveni has tried to keep appearances just to enable M7 to achieve his set mission, it is understood, that the family is totally broken up and the ongoing Tumukunde row has baffled even members of the High Command, Court Martial and NRM who can hardly understand the machinations. It is also understood, that there was a recent attempt to rescue Tumukunde from his illegal military detention. Reports suggest that M7 believed that Tumukunde’s rescuers if successful were likely to install him as a new president. M7 is reported to have told his closest allies that he feared that Tumukunde could be made a leader almost along the lines that former Ghana leader Jerry Rawlings who was rescued from military detention and made the country’s leader by his rescuers. At the time of writing, Museveni was reported to have panicked at the visit to Henry Tumukunde by former army commander Mugisha Muntu and spychief David Pulkol. Tumukunde’s visitors are reputed political opponents of Y Museveni. The visit also comes amidst credible reports of a creeping military coup against Museveni’s surviving clique. Latest reports have suggested escalated military and security tension particularly following the mysterious Garang helicopter assassination. “The media clampdown is just a sympton of the deep ongoing military and political unrest” facing the ruling camp.
Accordingly, when M7 learnt yet again that the Eritrean and Janet were again meeting regularly at Tumukunde’s residence in Kololo, he decidedly opted to arrest him after failing to negotiate with him to set Janet free of the lover-boy. It is understood that Salim Saleh strongly advised his elder brother M7 to ‘this time stand firm against Tumukunde and serious consider divorcing Janet’. He reportedly told M7, “If Nelson Mandela got rid of Winnie Mandela but managed to even get stronger, why can’t you get rid of this hypocrite who poses as a saved woman yet she is a prostitute. You have access to any of the beauties in Uganda and elsewhere.” Museveni is reported to have suggested jokingly that he would rather live like Obote who was divorced in practice from Miria but still keeps the marriage status. Museveni was however, reportedly extremely confused. He later opted for the seemingly dangerous path or arresting Tumukunde and staking Janet. He also reportedly sought advise on tactics and opted to involve the most senior members of the army in botched negations to forestall a possible military backlash that he so much dreads. He also promised to provide Tumukunde with the best possible six star hotel facilities while in detention and offered to back down if the situation warranted. After faked negotiations about Tumukunde’s radio talk show programme, M7 eventually arrested Tumukunde while making it appear like a decision of senior army officers and kept him at their mess to monitor the military implications of such a move. Janet is reported to have suggested that this was the final peace she had awaited for. Sources in Entebbe, Kampala and Rwakitura have now confirmed that a divorce is already in effect pending its announcement. If there is a delay, it will be mainly for personal gains from both parties who are said to be earning an estimated US $ 2.3 million daily from business and corruption. The beneficiaries include lover girls and lover boys who may lose if an official divorce was announced.
Security sources in State House, Nakasero have revealed that recently Janet Museveni confronted Salim Saleh in the presence of Museveni and demanded to know why he has been faking himself as the father of Hindubi’s children. Salim Saleh reported that the first family should not regard him as a semi illiterate any more. He said, he has attained the necessary constitutional qualifications to enable him to become the President whether through a military coup or through elections. The outbursts reportedly went out of hand and attracted several onlookers who pretended not to understand the entire story for fear of their jobs and their lives. Salim Saleh who sources say had consumed reasonable quantities of alcohol displayed a lot of unusual courage in facing up the first couple. Museveni is reported to have sought the assistance of his support staff to drag away Salim Saleh without at the same time risking him spilling more beans. The attempts to drag Salim away reportedly turned him more out of control. He reportedly shouted in both English and Runyankore that “You two are hypocrites who have conned this country for too long and it is essential that you are ejected from public life back to your small village. For instance why are you conning the whole world about HIV/AIDS? Which of you adheres to the ABC semantics of Abstain from sex or Be faithful to your partner or use Condom if you cannot do A and B? It is understood, Museveni then resorted to making jokes with Salim as Janet retreated into the residence and onlookers dispersed with tense pretences that they had seen and heard nothing.
It should be strongly noted that Yoweri Museveni and his family have Swedish citizenship contrary to Uganda law. There are reports that he plans to re-settle in Sweden if and when he leaves office if circumstances allow.
